HYDERABAD: Hyderabad is gearing up to get rid of over 1,000 slums dotting the city to create for itself a reputation as the best investment destination and citizen-friendly city in the country.

Greater HyderabadMunicipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner C V S K Sarma on Friday told a gathering of CEOs of global IT companies at the ongoing Hyderabad IT Summit that the city would become slum-free in the next two years.

He said the GHMC was identifying places on the outskirts to rehabilitate people living in the city slums.

"Wherever the livelihood of these people is connected to the local populace, we plan to build multi-storeyed buildings to accommodate them. They will be provided with all amenities," he informed. The GHM Ccommissioner said that a major cleanliness drive was on in the city and in keeping with this waste was being converted into energy.

Claiming that the city was emerging as the best place for people of various communities and states to settle down, he said that the civic bodies were focused on addressing problems like traffic, pollution, congestion and potable water.

GHMC would create 1,800 new parks across the city to provide lung space and of these, 1,500 parks would have themes like butterfly garden, medicinal and herbal and botanical gardens.
